Robert Lee Frost was a famous American writer and poet. He is synonymously remembered for his articulate use of fantastic traditional metrics and verses in his poetry. Childhood
Robert Lee Frost was born on 26th March 1874 in Francisco, California, to William Prescott Frost and Isabelle Moodie. His father was of English descent while his mother was of Scottish descent. However, having been born in America, Frost acquired American nationality by birth. His father worked as a journalist with the San Francisco Evening Bulletin, while his mother was actively involved with the family as a housewife. Frost grew up in San Francisco, but he moved to Lawrence, Massachusetts, after the death of his father in 1885, when he was only nine years.
Education and Early Career
Frost graduated from Lawrence High School in 1892 and joined Dartmouth College for a short period. Later on, he enrolled at Harvard to further pursue his studies but, unfortunately, never attained any formal degree. Frost then returned to his home and started working as an educator in local schools. At some point, he worked as a newspaper delivery boy and a factory laborer. He, however, did not commit to any of these jobs because he had an immense passion for literature and poetry.
Later Life
After the start of World War 1, Frost went back to America and bought land in Franconia, New Hampshire. There, he began a new chapter of his life as a lecturer. In the years ranging between 1916 and 1938, Frost served as an English teacher at Amherst College in Massachusetts. His students remember his for always encouraging them to express human resonance and voice in their writings. During the fall and summer of 1921 to 1963, Frost dedicated his time and effort to teaching English at Middlebury College, Vermont. He also secured a teaching post at Michigan University in 1921. At this time, Frost had bought a piece of land in Miami, Florida and named it Pencil Pine, where he would spend his winter days. In the following years of his life, he would shuffle between his three residences during different seasons.
Personal Life
Frost’s personal life was marked by grief, pain, and loss. His father lost his life to tuberculosis when Frost was only 11 years old, leaving the family with only eight dollars. His mother worked hard to fend for the family, but she also succumbed to cancer in 1900. Frost married his high school sweetheart Elinor, and they were blessed with six children. However, only two of his children (Irma and Lesley) outlived him. His son Eliot died of cholera in 1900; his daughter Carol committed suicide in 1940, his daughter Marjorie died of puerperal fever in 1934; and his daughter Bettina died a day after her birth in 1907. In 1920, Frost’s only Sister Jeanie developed a mental illness, and he had to commit her to a psychiatric facility, where she died nine years later. Unfortunately, mental illness ran in the family as both he and his mother struggled with depression. In 1947, his daughter Irma also got committed to a psychiatric hospital, and his wife Elinor also suffered from depressive attacks. Elinor later developed heart problems and was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1937. Unfortunately, she died of heart failure in 1938.
Poetic Career
In 1892, Frost graduated from Lawrence high school, where he was recognized for his poetry skills and received a co-valedictorian honor with his future wife, Elinor. After failing in his farming ventures, Frost moved to Derry to further pursue his passion for poetry. He moved to England in 1912, where he interacted with the works of famous British poets such as Rupert Brooke, Robert Graves, and Edward Thomas. Robert decided to move from Derry after he failed in his farming endeavor. In the year 1912, he moved to England, where he came across the works of contemporary British poets, such as Edward Thomas, Rupert Brooke, and Robert Graves. In 1913, Frost struck a friendship with the famous poet Ezra Pound who helped him get his first poetry book titled ‘A Boy’s Will’ the same year. Two years after this, the New Yorker published his famous poem ‘My Butterfly’ which steered his status as an established poet.
It was in 1913 that his first book of poetry, A Boy’s Will, was published. Robert, then, struck a friendship with the poet Ezra Pound, who helped him promote and publish his work later on. Frost wrote most of his popular poetry during this phase only. To celebrate this publication, Frost privately printed a series of six poems and made two copies of Twilight, one for his then-fiancée and another for himself. When he went back to America in 1915, Frost was recognized as a renowned poet. In 1915, Holt published an American edition of his poem ‘North Boston,’ and this made other periodicals that had once rejected him to seek after his works. In the years that followed until his death, Frost wrote numerous books and poems and rose to become the unofficial laureate of poems in the United States.
Accomplishments
In 1924, Frost received his first Pulitzer honor and won three more in 1931, 1937, and 1943. On his 75 birthday, the US senate honored him by passing a resolution that acknowledged that “His poems have helped to guide American thought and humor and wisdom, setting forth to our minds a reliable representation of ourselves and all men.” Similarly, the State of Vermont honored him in 1955 by naming a mountain in Ripton after him. In 1961 at Jon F. Kennedy’s presidential inauguration, Frost was honored to read a poem. He wrote a poem entitled ‘Dedication,’ but the harsh weather deterred him from reading it. He instead recited a poem called “The Gift,” which the president has initially requested him to read. Frost got nominated for the Nobel Literature Prize 31 times. The Robert Frost Hall at the Southern New Hampshire University was named after him as recognition for his mastery of literature and poetry.

His plays include A Way Out, The Cow’s in the Corn, A Masque of Reason, and A Masque of Mercy. He also wrote prose books which include The Letters of Robert Frost to Louis Untermeyer; Robert Frost and John Bartlett: The Record of a Friendship; Selected Letters of Robert Frost; Interviews with Robert Frost; Family Letters of Robert and Elinor Frost; Robert Frost and Sidney Cox: Forty Years of Friendship; and The Notebooks of Robert Frost.
Death
Frost died on 29th January 1963 after he developed complications from his prostate operation. He was buried at the Bennington Cemetery, where his epitaph reads, ‘I had a lover’s quarrel with the world.’ He was 89 years of age.
