Kingston-Bryce Limited (KBL) is a furniture manufacturer that is popular for custom-made furniture. If KBL is to acquire a competitor, it ought to be a business dealing with custom furniture as well. In any business, competition is inevitable; it is an essential part of a business that enables a healthy business environment. In fact, one of the reasons why a business may decide to merge is to grow and improve the business (DePamphilis, 2014).However, the first step in the acquisition of a competitor is to identify why this competitor is worth the acquisition. One of the questions that the business should ask itself is what does the competitor offer that we don’t offer? If the answer to this question is that there is something that the competitor offers that the business does not offer, then the acquisition may be justified. A close scrutiny of the business competitor in the interest of KBL reveals that the competitor is new to the business and if offering a new product that is similar to the custom furniture KBL offers. This is one of the reasons why it would prudent is the business identifies ways to acquire the competitor. Hereby, having passed this criterion, the process of acquisition is justified to proceed to the next step.
After identifying the worthiness of the competitor, it is evident that the acquisition would be fruitful in ensuring that KBL expands its operations and triple its workforce. However, a proper project management plan has to be put in place to ensure the success of the project in attaining these goals and objectives. To achieve this, some of the project management skills that I intend to utilize to accomplish these goals and objectives include; initiation, planning, executing, and controlling (Kaplan, 2016). As a project manager, I would be responsible for overseeing the through initiation all the way to the last step. I will develop a team that I am going to lead in the planning and implementation of the project.
Furthermore, I will be updating the management on the progress of the project on a weekly basis. One of the ways of ensuring the success of a project is proper scheduling (Li, 2019). In this case, the project would need an appropriate schedule of the timeline of the project detailing when and how the resources would be used in the entire project. Since the business is set for the project, I will utilize negotiation skills to ensure that the business is set to benefit from the acquisition. After getting the demands of the competitor, I will provide them with a pushback entailing the businesses’ goals and objectives as well as that incorporates some of the interests of the competitor.
Funding Schedule
Funding is the most essential part of the project. With the project having being allocated a $5 million budget, I will ensure these funds are used appropriately and effectively. Since the project would mean that the business has to be expanded to accommodate the competitor, $2 million would be allocated to labor and material for maintenance and repairs. Labor costs would take approximately an additional $1.25 million and the remaining $750,000 would be used for maintenance and repair.
On top of that, periodic renovations would be allocated $500,000. Furthermore, insurances and taxes would take up to $200,000. On the other hand, utilities and supplies would receive approximately $300,000. The remaining $ 1 million would be used to cater for competitor’s expenses incurred during the merger.
Timelines
The project would take approximately 18 months to be complete. This period would be divided into three quotas of 6 months each. In the first 6 months, the project will be focused on renovations and expansions to fit in the new entry of the competitor. In the second quota, the project would be focused on acquiring necessary supplies and utilities necessary for the project. Lastly, in the last 6 months, the main focus would be to initiate the process of enforcing the entry of the competitor into the business which will include facilitating the transfer of its equipment as well as its staff and other assets.
