In my opinion, the actions of the police to place a GPS monitoring device was not warranted, and therefore it wasn’t reasonable fixing the device on Heuring’s car without notifying him. According to the United States Law, there must be evidence to act as proof that a crime had been committed before one is prosecuted. Additionally, Heuring was being accused of removing GPS device from his car of which the police had not notified him on whether there was any.
In reference to the article, Heuring’slawyers argued that he decided to get rid of the device because he never knew whether it belonged to the government of which I also support fully (Tan, 2012). Additionally, the law is not very clear on whether taking an unwarranted device out of your car should be treated as a theft case, even if one knew who the owner was. Therefore, in my opinion, and in support of Heuring’s Lawyers, the actions of the police required a warrant.Therefore, under this circumstance, the actions of the police were not reasonable at all. And this is plainly supported by the government lawyer that it should never be considered a case of theft if a person gets rid of a tracking device fixed by a private party.
On the other hand, there are more dangerous issues which need to be closely monitored by the government. This would allow them to take care of more serious cases, for example, the calamity of corona Virus that has befallen China and a few other countries. In reference to the Independent article on,traffic police have been authorized to make use of technology of facial-recognition to identify the Jaywalkers in order to control the spread of the Corona Virus (Heidel, 2013).Therefore, to such an epidemic, it would be much prudent for the government to come with more stringent measures such as the toll responders and facial recognition.Currently, the United States has increased the facial recognition technology at the security points. It is the best move by the Department of Homeland Security as they are using it to ensure at least 97% of travellers are screened. In my view, whenever people are aware that they are being monitored, they are less likely to commit a crime, an indication that the technology of facial recognition will be able to prevent atrocities.
I think it would be a bizarre action for the government to follow me without my consent. This is a dangerous action which is likely to turn the United States into a kind of totalitarian state. However, in a situation where I decide to cover up against the wishes of the government, it is likely to offer criminals a direct pathway to dangerous deeds (Heidel, 2013). I admit that it is out of acceptance, I will be able to benefit through allowing government surveillance, although I should be notified that this kind of tracking is happening in my life. They should always provide a warrant according to the law before these security technology measures are put in place.
Additionally, in dire situations such criminal activities or outbreak of an epidemic, I wouldn’t have any issues allowing the government to make use of the facial recognition technologies, toll transponder locations and cell phone locations. If used in the best capacity my security and those of others will be assured. Decisions and policies regarding the issue of security by the government should be executed according to the United States law.
To conclude, it should be understood that the government is permeating each and every aspect of my life. In reference to the article, I would advocate for a situation where the police utilize technological security measures,for example, tracking of my movement, use of facial recognition,transponder locations, and cell phone locations although by ensuring that the law is properly used.
