Philosophy of Schools and Learning
There are three major philosophies of education. These philosophes are divided into three categories, namely, teachers based philosophies, student-based philosophies, and society based philosophiesBBB. Teacher based philosophies of education are essentialism and perennialism. Essentialism theory teaches about skill that has been proven by previous generations that are needed by society. Such skills include leadership and teamwork.Perennialism theory entails that teachers should teach their students about things that havef everlasting relevance to all people everywhere. The approach emphasizes that teachers should teach things that are applicable to real-life situations. The things that I find still relevant in real-life situations include Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Melville’s Moby Dick.
Student based philosophies of education are progressivism, Humanism, and Constructivism. Progressivism theory of education focuses on equipping students with morals. The theory encourages students to learn and do things that are relevant to their lives. More so, it asserts that students’ progress and change are dependent on education. The humanism theory of education aims to make students understand their full potential. The philosophy encourages students to learn from the basis of their potential, interests, and motivation. The constructivism theory of education asserts that students gain knowledge from understanding their world. Therefore, it teaches students to change their world view by using education.
Society based theories of education are Reconstructionism and behaviorism. Behaviorism theory asserts that behaviors are learned through conditioning. Therefore, the theory emphasizes that beneficial behaviors should be constructed in society. Reconstructionism philosophy of education focuses suggests that society should address emerging issues for the purpose of creating a better and free society. It emphasizes that education is the only tool for solving social problems.
How I would Impact learners with education
BNN points out that the basic function of education is to enlighten individuals so that they can realize their potential and discover what it means to be human. Education acts as an eye-opener. Humans are born with so much potential, capabilities, abilities, and talents. But they never discover these potentials fully unless they get an education. Epistemology theory is the theory that focuses on education and Knowledge. GGG points out that epistemology theories focus on knowledge and cognition. Cognition involves the process of gaining knowledge through sense, thought, and experience. Knowledge is understanding facts, skills, and information through education.
MMM points out that pedagogical approaches to teaching involve theory and practice methods.I would use the styles so to promote active learning, encourage student to student engagement, and equip students with different learning styles. Pedagogical styles include conservatism, behaviorism, and Social Constructivism. Behaviorism entails using behaviorism as a method of teaching. If I were a teacher, I would use this style to issue direct instructions to students according to the topic of leaning. This is because the theory asserts that the teacher should be the authority figure in the classroom. Second, the constructivism theory asserts that students learn through experience. Students are the center of the experience. Therefore, I will come up with activities that enable students to learn. For young students, I would involve physical practices, while for older students, I would use symbolic and abstract ideas to teach. Social constructivism pedagogy involves both the students and teachers. It asserts that learning is a collaborative process. Therefore, as a teacher, I would come up withgroup work activities that involve small groups and idealistic topics. I would also use the questioning technique in class for the purpose of engaging the student. With these strategies, I will aim to equip learners with facts, skills, values, and beliefs that are realistic, relevant, and beneficial to them.
Diversity to Consider
It is important for teachers to consider the different cultural groups and social groups in the classroom. I would aim to understand diversity so that I can enlighten the student on the importance of diversity. I will also teach them about diversity in order to encourage cultural competence. I will be free with the students, and I will encourage them to ask questions that will promote positive diversity in the class. More, as a teacher, I will communicate to them my vision and concern that are related to diversity. I believe that this will reduce prejudices, and it will stimulate empathy towards each one’s culture and social group.
Education brings progress to both the individual and society. It is achieved through reading, researching, training, and discussions. It is through these methods that students are able to acquire knowledge and skills. More so, people are able to develop better values and progressive skills by using these techniques.
