Importance of Character’s Journey in Literature Works
One of the most common themes in Western Literature is that of the journey or odyssey. From Homer to the Bible, from Shakespeare to even popular writers like J.K. Rowling, great writers have often wrestled with the idea of a character’s journey from life to death (or death to life), from ignorance to understanding, from immaturity to maturity, etc. The idea of a physical journey is often appropriated to discuss a deeper, more significant internal journey.As a reader, it is always uplifting and motivating to see someone make good choices in life that consequently enhances him/her as a person. Interestingly, while most main characters are often depicted to experience a positive transformation, there are some who often change for the worse. The three literature works learned in class;Sonny’s Blues, A Rose for Emily, and A Raisin in the Sun, portray the element of main character’s journey transformation in different ways, but with one main objective, which is to show the significance of a change in a person’s life. The purpose of this essay is, therefore, to compare and contrast the journeys of various characters from these three literature works learned in class.
In the literature work titled Sonny’s Blues written by James Baldwin, the two characters, the narrator and his younger brother Sony, are depicted to be undergoing through different journeys of life. While the narrator is undergoing through the journey of understanding his brother and accepting who he has become, Sonny, on the other hand, is going through the journey of adulthood by trying so hard to leave behind his previous troubled life and finding one thing that he loves most that if he does he can be successful and respected in the neighborhood. The story begins when the unnamed narrator of the story discovers from a newspaper that his younger brother, Sonny, has been arrested for drug-related charges. At this point, the reader is able to distinguish the lives of these two leading characters and their significance to the story. It is baffling to see someone’s learning of his brother’s arrest through the newspaper. This shows how socially, these two are far apart. At the same time, Sonny is depicted as a confused person who really has no idea of what he wants in life. It is from this point that the journey of these two characters begins. At some point, the narrator uses flashback to show how Sonny’s teenage life was so troubling that plunged him into constant confrontation with their father. As the story ends, Sonny invites the narrator to a small jazz club where he was supposed to perform. During the performance, the narrator learns of how the audience respects and cherish Sonny, one thing that he failed to do. The narrator watches his brother struggle with music but finally realizes that this is who Sonny is and accepts him of who he and what he is made of.
In the literature work titled “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner, the journey of Emily is discussed in five different sections. In the first section, the narrator recalls the death and funeral of Emily Grierson. In the second section, the narrator gives a glimpse of Emily’s life by describing how her father had turned away many potential suitors who came to ask Emily for her hand in marriage. The narrator also describes the concerns that the townspeople had after a powerful odor emanated from Emily property. In the third section, the narrator describes the long sickness that Emilybattled with after the death of her father. In this section, the narrator also describes the love affair Emily had with Homer Barron, a construction company director who had been given the tender to construct sidewalks in the town. The townspeople pitied Emily of her decision to date Barron on the grounds that she was forgetting her family name and becoming involved with a man who was beneath her standards.
In the fourth section, the narrator describes the continued deterioration of Emily mental state and the people are worried that she might use the poison meant for killing rats to kill herself after her potential marriage to Homer became highly unlikely. In section five, the narrator describes the events that followed Emily’s death. It is in this section that the townspeople open the door to the upstairs room which had not been opened for years. They are shocked to find Barron’s body stretched on the bead as well as a man’s wedding suit and other wedding items. The events in these five sections show Emily’s journey of life before her death and after death. In this story, the actions and beliefs of Emily’s father are portrayed to have played a significant role in Emily’s life journey including her failure to get married in time, her belief that her father was still alive despite his death, and the perceptions people had towards her and her family in general.
In the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, the journey of most family and the constant feuds these family members face after the death of the head of such families die is discussed. The play is about the journey of life of the Youngers, an African-American family living in Chicago in the 1950s, after the death of their father. The play opens by different wishes being given by each member of the Youngers after they were told they would receive an insurance check of about $10,000. The play shows the clashing interests held by these family members and how it threatens to divide them. The play, however, ends with these family members coming together after recognizing that their future seems uncertain and dangerous. However, they are optimistic that they can unite and live a better life and succeed in overcoming their problems as a family if they stick together and resolve their differences.
These three literature works are similar because they provide different pictures of the journeys of their main characters. They show how the leading characters transform from the beginning to the end of these stories. The story Sonny’s Bluesand the playA Raisin in the Sun are similar because they portray a positive journey and life transformation. This is because, in both literary works, the leading characters move from the point of disagreement and confusion to a point where they are in agreement with each other. However, in the story A Rose for Emily the leading character is depicted to be taking a negative journey of life since her problems seem to increase day by day, which ultimately result in her downfall as a character. Even though depicting a negative journey transformation of the character may lead to depressing and poor-selling of books in case the character is given the lead role, these tragic characters are often fascinating to watch because they portray the real scenario of life. That is, not everyone in the world today will change for the better. Others tend to often change for the worse by engaging in immoral activities such as drug abuse, prostitution, murder, or even blasphemy. Hence, creating leading characters that portray both positive and negative journey transformations is essential in depicting the irony about life, and to help the reader understand that the journey of life can take two different paths; the path to success and happiness or the path to destruction and suffering just as depicted in the three literature works discussed above.
