Hallways and doorways will be wider and situated to allow for wheelchairs, bathrooms will have bathtubs that have doors to accommodate the same thing with retractable seating under the shower head. A recent article talked about smart housing being the wave of the future with the idea that a “smart city will combine economic growth with a smaller impact on the environment” (Vitaliev, 2014, p. 46) and that is true of individual houses as well. Not only will the houses be built to optimize wind and solar technology but each house will come equipped with ‘smart’ features such as wifi accessibility, automatic windows and doors, automatically controlled heating and air conditioning, appliances that sleep without using power, and even water heaters that heat water on demand.
Houses in the future will also be more family friendly with walls that automatically become television sets that automatically discern who is in the room and responds by turning to the most popular channel(s). Additionally, there will be access to computers through the same venue and mirrors that can be programmed to lie (if necessary) or to make comments that ensure the person feels good about herself. Other features will include lights that automatically turn on or off, and adjust to the number of people in the room. The kitchen will also be a modernized area; meals will be automatically planned for based on who will be home and what their favorite meals are. Floors will be adjustable and will automatically move up and down to make walking easier or harder depending on the individual walking there. Additionally, there will be exercise friendly rooms with built in weight, aerobic and Sparq training tools. Houses will automatically track activities through a system similar to GPS and assist the owners by providing data on how to be more efficient and effective. This type of system is already under study based on information from a recent report; the report determined that “the toll was used by older adults to record common walking routes (tracked using built-in GPS) and geocoded audio narratives and photographs of the local neighborhood environment” (Buman, Winter, Sheats, Hekler, Otten, Grieco, King, 2013, p. 41).
Last, but certainly not least, rooms will have adjustable walls and ceilings that allow for company convenience or to easily dismantle for large-space activities. Re-configuring each room will be accomplished in less time than it would take to design the new space.
