Preparation
Having lived in my parent’s house for a long time, a crisis came when the family size started increasing, and there was hardly enough space for everyone. My sister came back home and had to be housed with her two young children. My cousin, who had been living in my home during school days, had requested to move in permanently the next month. The house, therefore, became stuffed, lacked privacy, and was always noisy. My parents felt that a silent home with privacy was ideal and thus involved me in deciding on the best course of action.
The first step was the identification of the problem.My family lived in a quad bedroom; one occupied by my parents, the other occupied by my sister; my cousin and I occupied the other one while the last room was stuffed with all kinds of unused attires and machinery. The problem was, therefore, lack of space, from which stemmed all the other issues.
The second step was establishing a decision criterion. The problem would be more pronounced in the next month when my cousin was to move into our home permanently, at which point a long-lasting solution was critical.My parents were not financially stable at the time; hence buying a house would require some time. Clearing the extra room would only require a week to accomplish and included less cost. Step 3 was skipped due to there being no simple mechanism of weighing these.Next was the step of highlighting the alternatives. My parents suggested spending some extra cash to rent my sister and her kids a house until she secured employment. There was also an option of turning down the cousin’s request to come and stay over. However, evaluating this revealed that all the other opinions involved an adverse outcome except buying a house and clearing the extra room. Buying a house would take time but solve the problem permanently while clearing an extra room would only solve the problem for a short time. The optimal decision was therefore made to use family savings and buy a house in two months.Meanwhile, clear the extra room to house the family. This was a risk but kept an open mind that with a bigger house, space would never again pose a problem even in the face of a larger family.
Bias evident in the decision-making model
This decision skipped the third step of weighing the established criteria because of an anchoring bias that developed upon the idea of increasing space. My mind quickly became convinced that buying a house would be the best solution since this is the first idea that my father put across.
My decision-making model
My favorite style of decision making is the conceptual model. This approach is oriented to achievement and relies heavily on creativity. The style embraces an open-minded approach since it constitutes many uncertainties (M’mangaet al.).Notably, the model works by taking on high risks and accepting the results that stem from them. I analyze each alternative and stick to the one depicting fewer risks. For my future decision making, I will consider a directive decision making style. This is driven by results and takes an intuitive approach. The approach reacts quickly, which will improve my resilience based on the outcome of results.

The success of any business is dependent on the ability of the leader to make informed decisions regarding various issues.
