Summarise and discuss In American Democracy broken

Under President Barack Obama, Americans saw how a divided government results in crisis-wracked governance, with the Republican Congress road blocking the appointments made by the president more so in the judicial courts and engaging in games with debt ceiling that threatened to make the nation go into default. Under the new administration of President Trump, Americans are encountering a unitary government, which also results in crisis-wracked governance, with the Republican Congress not being in the position to coalesce around a plan.  There is a gridlock under both the unitary and divided government, which asserts that the issue is systematic and not by a specific partisan arrangement. There are three branches of the US government; the executive, judiciary, and the legislative congress, which were designed by founding fathers to check on each other for efficiency. However, some Republicans believe that the president has misused power over immigration policies (Achen& Bartels, 2017).

The judiciary is supposed to be independent, but recently there are various political influences over the status of the judicial body in the United States hence affecting the nation’s political identity; thus, people believing that the judiciary is not of more significant help to them thus may evoke public outrage. Within the presidential system, gridlock results in a constitutional breakage with no resolution. Hence, the US recent shutdown and execution policy of immigration is an instance of the type of dynamic that results in coups and putsches abroad. Therefore, America’s constitutional democracy can be deemed to be going to collapse.

Question 2: Discuss the documentary ″How Many People Can Live on Planet Earth

In this documentary, naturalist Sir David Attenborough examines if the universe is heading to a population crisis. He reflects on the outstanding impacts of this rapid development both on people and the environment. Since more of the expected growth in the human population is projected to be from developed nations, it is the lifestyle lived by many in the West that have the most effect on the planet.  Most rich countries tend to lease land to grow food in impoverished nations. The production of food occupies 40% of the earth, whereas only 7% of the planet is used for farming (Uniyal, Paliwal,Kaphaliya& Sharma, 2020). Some professionals assert that in the UK, consumers use more than half of the resources in the world. He assesses if persons should engage not only to smaller families but also alter their way of life due to humanity and the planet.

Question 3: How does a consumer society foster crime?

Consumer society tends to foster crime. Primarily, consumption is the engine that promotes the economy. The current society in the United States of America is highly based on consumption and debt. Initially, there was a lot to spend in the US economy. However, the trend changed as wages began to stagnate, and the people had less to buy products. Primarily, 70% of the gross domestic product comes from individuals who purchase products in the USA. When we restrict ourselves from not buying, we save then have an economy established on consumption. The failed consumer suffers from both exclusion and isolation (Baudrillard, 2016). The poor, in the past times, were united towards uplifting one another. Any misery among them could be handled effectively. Nowadays, the poor live in shame from the fear of social failure. This creates envy, and the poor want to be like the rich in society. This results in engagement in crime since the impulse of the poor to belong to and be normal will compel them into cheating and steal for quick riches. This is a crime triggered by the egoism of consumerism due to the competitive traits.

Question 4: Are famines always man-made?

All famine, despite time and geography, can be regarded to be human-made. This assertion is principle based on the rationale that while nature may establish conditions of food shortage, it is the manner that short shortage is handled through a serious of aspects entailing the intervention of government, economy, and man, which dictates if famine will result or not. Famine is caused by people who are the same who can avoid it. People tend to starve due to local, national, or regional decline in food availability to a point below the minimum primary for the survival of the population. The decline has been resulted by various factors ranging from drought to the changing government policy. In the case of drought, the government should intervene by supplying food to the affected regions (Devereux, Sida&Nelis, 2017). Drought is brought by crop failure and starvation. There exist crops that are drought resistant, and also foods can be moved to the affected regions; thus, famine should not occur anymore.

Failure is also another result of famine being man-made. The modern famine is majorly brought about by policies that resulted in unnecessary suffering and starvation of millions as the colonial powers took food from their dominions to feed their populations or support their war elsewhere alongside pushing farmers to grow crops that could be sold to Europe instead of growing food to be sued at home. Communism has been a significant factor for famine as evidence in China in the 1950s as the communist policies took so much grain from farmers to feed the cities; compelling farmers to stay on collective farms thus had no incentive to grow more. Hence, famine is mad made due to the policies that result in other policies that fail to address them effectively.

Question 5: Why is the US poor compared to similar rich nations?

Poverty tends to be muchhigher in the United States than in other industrialized nations.Regardless of the way that poverty is assessed, the United States is at the high end when it comes to inequality and poverty. When examining poverty among single-parent households, poverty among the working class, and the children’s degree ofpoverty, the poverty storylineis all the same. The United States has the highest levels of poverty in the developed universe. Moreover, the inequality base on income and wealth tends to be high when compared to other industrialized nations.

The rationale behind the high levels of poverty is due to the failure of policies and programs that are aimed at minimizing and eliminating poverty. The United States of America can fail in institutionalizing quality through the welfare states. The country does not adopt the relevant social policy aimed at eliminating poverty in the various states. These programs t are aimed at ensuring that inequalities and poverty highly result in minimizing the levels of poverty.

Moreover, the minimum safety net plays an essential role in the high poverty levels in the United States of America. The country commits fewer resources to programs that are aimed at helping the economically susceptible. It allocates less proportion of its Gross domestic product to social welfare programs than other developed nations (Kim, 2017). As an outcome, the country has been regarded as being a reluctant welfare state since it is so restricted in scope. The US also has no variety of social insurance programs that highly eliminate families from falling into poverty like other developed nations. These programs entail children allowances which are created to fund families with children alongside health coverage for child care.
